For centuries Kurds have been enslaved and oppressed by the enemies of Kurdistan. A part of our beloved homeland is still weeping, with its eyes shedding tears of blood. When will God touch this sad part of our land with the hand of His mercy and wipe away its tears?

In the 1980s, in the context of the terrible situation in which North Kurdistan was going through, in that political hiatus and in the heart of Kurdish people, PKK was born. With its birth it conceived a respectable, able leader with his own philosophy and a Kurdish strategy based on firm belief in the unity of Kurdistan and the creation of a Kurdish state on socialist principles. This leader is Abdulla Ocelan.

PKK exhausted all peaceful diplomatic ways to find a just solution to the problems of Kurdish people in North Kurdistan. But all its efforts were in vain. In reaction to this Mr Ocelan left as a political leader to Kurdistan mountains and lit the flame of revolution. Kurdish people with all their strata supported this talented leader. In all the stages of revolution he remained committed to peaceful ways to resolve the Kurdish issue in Turkey, and he declared unilateral ceasefire several times. But the Turkish regime never made a positive response.

The economic losses that Turkey suffered and its fear of the growth of Ocelan’s revolutionary strength, made Turkey enter into conspiracies to eliminate the Kurdish leader and his revolution. As a result Turkey managed to bring together an international gang whose heads were the US, Israel and some European countries especially Greece on the excuse that they mediate between Turkey and Syria for the resolution of their water dispute. But the aim was clear: to pressurise Syria to push Ocelan out of Lebanon and seek refuge in a European country. But the scenario was different. He was not given asylum in any European country and on that black day on 15 February 1991 he was abducted while he was in an African country and surrendered to the hands of the reactionary Turkish state. Then Europe shut all its human rights doors to him. Ocelan was put in solitary jail, tortured and sentenced to life after a sham trial.

But the faith of his people in this leader did not wane. That is why, though he was in prison, he was re-elected as leader. From his prison he has continued to call for peace. Now he has made a unilateral ceasefire. But Turkey true to its evil ways has not made any positive response to this ceasefire either. Turkish state says there is no Kurdish problem in Turkey. To prove this they continually violate the human rights of Kurdish people and democratic principles.

But Turkish chauvinists live in fantasy. We have a strong trust that Ocelan will continue to inspire the Kurdish people, his cause will progress day by day, his guerrillas will as ever be ready to sacrifice for freedom and inevitably the Kurdish people must have their independence.

In commemorating this black day all Kurdish people cry in one voice: Glory to Abdullah Ocelan, Freedom to Kurdistan, Shame and defeat for the enemies of our people.
