Galatasaray fight to keep United target Yilmaz
Manchester United target Burak Yilmaz could leave Galatasaray this summer, according to the club's manager Fatih Terim. The powerful striker, who has been linked to United, has been in sensational form since moving to the Turkish giants last summer, netting 26 goals in 31 appearances. The Champions League joint top scorer has attracted interest from across Europe and a £10 million offer is reportedly enough to sign him. Speaking to The Observer, boss Terim said: “It's not going to be easy to keep him. He has targets but it will be his decision. Being wanted is a good thing, but we are fond of him and believe he will do great things for us in the future.” The 59-year-old drew comparisons between Yilmaz and Andriy Shevchenko, who he managed during his time at AC Milan in 2001. Terim said: “Andriy Shevchenko was the same. He is always thinking about scoring one more goal. Loving football is very important. I think he is going to get better and better.”
Of course, today’s papers are filled with reaction to United’s 1-0 defeat at Chelsea in the FA Cup with many journalists congratulating the Blues on their slender triumph. Meanwhile, Jim White of The Telegraph comments on Rio Ferdinand’s ignorance to jeers from the home fans at Stamford Bridge, claiming the Reds defender might have been “more worried by what was going on in front of him” and that his quest to win the trophy for a first time is still ongoing.
Elsewhere, Dominic Fifield ofThe Guardian praises Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to shake hands with Rafa Benitez and also Frank Lampard, saying “it was easy to read plenty into that gesture, too, given the veteran midfielder's contractual status" with regard to the latter.
